What is Diceware Passphrase Generator?
Diceware turns dice rolls into words: five dice select one of 7,776 words from the EFF large wordlist. You can let the page roll virtual dice with a secure random generator or type the results of real dice so that no computer randomness is involved at all.
How to use Diceware Passphrase Generator
- Under Dice, choose Roll virtual dice or Enter my own dice rolls.
- For virtual dice, set the Number of words (EFF recommends at least 6) and click Roll again.
- For real dice, roll five dice per word and type the digits 1–6 into Dice rolls.
- Pick a Separator and copy the passphrase; the table shows which dice code produced each word.
Example
Dice rolls: 11111 11112 66666
abacus abdomen zoom (38.8 bits)
Three words are shown for brevity; use six or more for real passphrases.
When to use Diceware Passphrase Generator
Use diceware for passwords you must type or remember: password-manager master passwords, disk-encryption passphrases, SSH key passphrases. For passwords stored in a manager and never typed, a random character password is shorter for the same strength.
How Diceware Passphrase Generator works
Each word index is the 5-digit dice code read as a base-6 number (11111 = abacus, 66666 = zoom), giving 6^5 = 7,776 equally likely words. Virtual dice use crypto.getRandomValues with rejection sampling for each die. Every word adds log2(7776) ≈ 12.925 bits, so 6 words give 77.5 bits, even if an attacker knows you used this exact list. The wordlist is the official EFF large wordlist (2016), loaded only when the tool opens.
Common Use Cases
- Creating a password manager master password
- Choosing a full-disk encryption or LUKS/BitLocker passphrase
- Protecting a PGP or SSH private key
- Generating a passphrase offline with physical dice for maximum trust
Security Note
Rolls typed into the page stay in your browser. Do not store the passphrase in plain text; memorize it or keep it in a password manager or sealed paper backup.
FAQs
Why use physical dice?
Real dice remove any dependence on your computer's random number generator. The page only performs the lookup, which you can verify against the published EFF list.
How many words do I need?
EFF recommends at least 6 words (77.5 bits). Seven words (90 bits) are a comfortable choice for master passwords.
Can I reorder or pick the words I like?
No. Choosing among results reduces entropy. Use the words exactly as rolled.
Is the EFF list the same as the original diceware list?
No. The EFF large list (2016) replaced Arnold Reinhold's original list with longer, more memorable and less offensive words, but uses the same 5-dice scheme.
