Runs entirely in your browser. Your data is never uploaded.

What is Image Converter?

This converter changes an image file from one format to another: PNG, JPEG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP or ICO. It reads any format your browser can decode (including WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP, ICO and SVG) and writes the format you choose. For formats without transparency you can pick the color that fills transparent areas.

How to use Image Converter

  1. Drop, choose or paste the image you want to convert.
  2. Select the Output format. Formats your browser cannot encode (often AVIF) are shown as not supported.
  3. Set Quality for JPEG, WebP or AVIF, and a Background color for JPEG, BMP or GIF if the image has transparency.
  4. Check the preview, then click the download button to save the converted file.

Example

Input
20×20 PNG whose left half is transparent and right half red, output JPEG, background #ffffff
Output
20×20 JPEG (file starts with bytes FF D8 FF); the left half is white, the right half red

When to use Image Converter

Use it when a website, app or printer only accepts a specific format, or to turn a WebP/AVIF download into a PNG or JPEG you can edit. For a favicon with several sizes use the ICO Converter instead, and for reducing file size use the Image Compressor. Converting a lossy JPEG to PNG does not restore lost quality; it just stores the same pixels losslessly.

How Image Converter works

The source is decoded with createImageBitmap (EXIF orientation respected) and drawn on a canvas. PNG, JPEG, WebP and AVIF are encoded by the browser with canvas.toBlob; the tool checks the returned MIME type so it never silently hands you a PNG labeled as another format. BMP is written by the tool itself as an uncompressed 24-bit bitmap, GIF is quantized to 256 colors with gifenc, and ICO wraps a PNG (scaled to fit 256×256) in an ICO container. JPEG, BMP and GIF have no (full) alpha channel, so transparent pixels are composited over the chosen background color.

Common Use Cases

  • Turning WebP images saved from the web into JPEG or PNG for older software.
  • Converting a transparent PNG logo to JPEG with a white background for a document.
  • Creating a BMP for legacy tools or embedded displays.
  • Making a simple single-size .ico from a PNG.

Security Note

Images are decoded, processed and encoded locally in your browser with the Canvas API. Nothing is uploaded to a server.

FAQs

Why is AVIF disabled?

Encoding AVIF requires browser support for AVIF in canvas.toBlob, which many browsers do not have yet. The tool tests this and disables the option instead of producing a wrong file.

Does converting keep transparency?

PNG, WebP, AVIF and ICO keep transparency. JPEG and BMP cannot store it, and GIF output is flattened too, so transparent areas get the background color you choose.

Can I convert HEIC photos?

Only if your browser can decode HEIC (Safari on Apple devices can). Other browsers will show an error that the image could not be opened.
