Keyboard: Space = start/pause, L = lap, R = reset

What is Online Stopwatch?

A browser stopwatch that measures elapsed time to the hundredth of a second. You can record laps: each lap shows its own time and the running total (split time), and once you have two or more laps the fastest and slowest are marked.

How to use Online Stopwatch

  1. Click Start (or press Space) to begin timing.
  2. Click Lap (or press L) each time you want to record a lap; the table shows the lap time and the total split.
  3. Click Pause to stop the clock and Resume to continue from the same time.
  4. Click Reset (or press R) to clear the time and all laps, or Copy to copy the lap table as text.

Example

Input
Start, Lap after 1.25 s, Lap after 3.00 s, Pause
Output
Lap 1: 00:01.25 (total 00:01.25), Lap 2: 00:01.75 (total 00:03.00) – lap 1 marked fastest

Lap time = split time minus the previous split.

When to use Online Stopwatch

Use it for timing workouts, laps on a track, speeches, cooking steps or quick benchmarks of manual tasks. It is not a substitute for certified sports timing equipment, and it does not keep running after you close or reload the page.

How Online Stopwatch works

Elapsed time is computed from performance.now(), a monotonic high-resolution clock, rather than by counting timer ticks. When you pause, the elapsed time so far is stored; when you resume, a new start point is taken and added to it. Because the display is always recalculated from these timestamps, the result stays exact even if the browser throttles a background tab or the screen redraws less often. Each lap stores the total elapsed time at that moment; the lap time is the difference from the previous lap.

Common Use Cases

  • Timing running or swimming laps and comparing split times
  • Measuring how long each part of a presentation takes
  • Tracking interval training rounds
  • Timing manual test steps or build processes

FAQs

What keyboard shortcuts are available?

Space starts or pauses, L records a lap and R resets. Shortcuts are ignored while you are typing in a form field.

Does the stopwatch keep accurate time if I switch tabs?

Yes. The time is calculated from timestamps, not from counting ticks, so it is correct when you come back even if the tab was throttled.

What is the difference between lap time and split time?

Lap time is the duration of that lap only. Split time is the total elapsed time from the start until that lap was recorded.

Is my lap data saved?

No. Laps exist only in the open page; use Copy to keep them before reloading.
