What is SHA-224 Hash Generator?

SHA-224 is the 224-bit member of the SHA-2 family: SHA-256 with a different initial value and the output truncated to 224 bits. This tool computes the 224-bit SHA-224 digest of text or raw bytes (hex or Base64) as you type and shows it as 56 hex characters or Base64.

How to use SHA-224 Hash Generator

  1. Type or paste your input into Text to hash — the digest updates as you type (an empty box shows the hash of empty input).
  2. Choose the Input encoding: Text (UTF-8) hashes the characters as UTF-8, Hex bytes or Base64 hash the decoded raw bytes.
  3. Pick the Output format (hex lowercase, hex uppercase or Base64) and click Copy.

Example

Input
abc
Output
23097d223405d8228642a477bda255b32aadbce4bda0b3f7e36c9da7

SHA-224 of the 3 ASCII bytes "abc" (UTF-8, hex lowercase output), the standard test vector.

When to use SHA-224 Hash Generator

Use the SHA-224 text tool to hash strings: reproduce a value from documentation or code, build test vectors, compare an API signature input, or check what a program should output. Do not use it to check a downloaded file: copying file contents into a text box changes line endings and encoding, so use the SHA-224 file checksum tool. If you are free to choose, SHA-256 is far more widely supported.

How SHA-224 Hash Generator works

SHA-224 runs the SHA-256 compression function (64 rounds on eight 32-bit words, 512-bit blocks, big-endian length padding) but starts from its own eight initial words (taken from the square roots of the 9th to 16th primes) and outputs only the first seven words. Because of the different IV, it is not simply the first 56 hex characters of SHA-256. The text is first converted to bytes (UTF-8 by default), so the same characters always give the same hash.

Common Use Cases

  • Check the expected SHA-224 of a string in a unit test or fixture
  • Hash hex bytes copied from a debugger, packet capture or protocol spec
  • Compare SHA-224 output between two programming languages that disagree
  • Generate deterministic identifiers or cache keys from text
  • Get the Base64 form of a SHA-224 digest for headers or configuration files

Security Note

SHA-224 has no known practical attacks. Plain hashes are also not suitable for storing passwords: use a slow, salted password hash such as Argon2, scrypt or bcrypt. Everything is computed locally in your browser; nothing you type is sent anywhere.

FAQs

Is SHA-224 just SHA-256 cut short?

No. It uses a different initial value, so its output is unrelated to the first 224 bits of SHA-256. For abc, SHA-224 is 23097d22… while SHA-256 starts with ba7816bf….

Where is SHA-224 used?

In protocols that want a 112-bit security level with a shorter digest, such as some DSA/ECDSA parameter sets (P-224), smart cards and constrained devices.

Why does the hash change completely when I change one character?

That is the avalanche effect every cryptographic hash is designed for: flipping one input bit changes about half of the 224 output bits, so similar inputs give unrelated digests.

Does a trailing space or newline matter?

Yes. The hash covers every byte, so abc and abc followed by a newline give different SHA-224 values. Make sure the input contains exactly the bytes you intend to hash.
