Slug Generator
Turn titles into clean URL slugs: removes accents, transliterates Vietnamese, Cyrillic and Greek, sets separator, case and max length. Bulk mode too.
Accents are removed (é → e, đ → d, ß → ss), Cyrillic and Greek are transliterated, every other run of characters becomes one separator, and the maximum length cuts at a separator so words are not split.
What is Slug Generator?
Converts titles and phrases into URL slugs such as "tieng-viet-co-dau-duong-pho". Accents are removed, Cyrillic and Greek are transliterated to Latin letters, everything else becomes a separator, and you control the separator, lowercase, maximum length and whether non-Latin letters are kept. Bulk mode creates one slug per line.
How to use Slug Generator
- Type or paste a title into Title or text.
- Choose the Separator and set Maximum length (0 = unlimited).
- Adjust options: lowercase, German umlauts as ae/oe/ue, symbols as words, keep non-Latin letters, one slug per line.
- Copy the slug.
Example
Tiếng Việt có dấu: Đường phố
tieng-viet-co-dau-duong-pho
When to use Slug Generator
Use it for blog post URLs, product pages, file names and anchors. Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Hindi and Thai are not romanised; either keep them (modern browsers display Unicode URLs) or write a Latin title. Keep slugs short and stable – changing a published slug breaks links unless you redirect.
How Slug Generator works
Optionally & @ % + are written out as words. German ä ö ü ß become ae oe ue ss when that option is on. Cyrillic (Russian, Ukrainian, Serbian, Macedonian) and Greek letters are transliterated with a simple scheme (щ → shch, ж → zh, θ → th). Accents are removed with Unicode NFD plus special cases (đ → d, ø → o, ß → ss, ł → l). Apostrophes are dropped, the text is lower-cased, and every run of characters other than letters and digits becomes one separator. The maximum length cuts at the last separator before the limit so words are not split.
Common Use Cases
- Creating permalinks for blog posts and articles
- Generating Vietnamese URL slugs without accents
- Making safe file names from document titles
- Bulk-creating slugs for product imports
- Transliterating Russian titles for URLs
FAQs
Hyphens or underscores?
Hyphens are the common choice for URLs because search engines treat them as word separators.
Why is my Chinese or Arabic title empty?
Those scripts cannot be transliterated by simple rules. Turn on Keep non-Latin letters to keep them in the slug, or write a short Latin title.
How does maximum length work?
The slug is cut at the last separator before the limit, so "the-quick-brown-fox" with 15 characters becomes "the-quick-brown".
Which transliteration is used for Russian?
A simple readable scheme (ж zh, х kh, ц ts, щ shch, ю yu, я ya; ъ and ь are dropped), similar to common URL slug libraries.
