Rotate and Flip Image
Rotate images by 90°, 180° or any angle and flip them horizontally or vertically. The canvas expands to fit, with transparent or colored corners.
Runs entirely in your browser. Your data is never uploaded.
What is Image Rotator?
This tool rotates an image in 90° steps or by any angle between −180° and 180°, and mirrors it horizontally or vertically. For angles that are not multiples of 90°, the canvas grows so nothing is cut off, and the new corners are transparent or filled with a color you pick.
How to use Image Rotator
- Drop, choose or paste an image.
- Use Rotate left 90°, Rotate right 90° or Rotate 180°, or set any Angle with the slider or number field.
- Toggle Flip horizontally / Flip vertically as needed.
- For free angles, keep Transparent corners or choose a background color, then download the result.
Example
40×20 image with red top-left, green top-right, blue bottom-left quadrants, Rotate right 90°
20×40 image whose top-left pixel is blue (the former bottom-left corner)
When to use Image Rotator
Use it to fix sideways photos, straighten a slightly tilted scan or horizon, or create mirror images. Rotating by a free angle resamples pixels and slightly softens the image; repeated free rotations add up, so rotate once from the original.
How Image Rotator works
The output size is the bounding box of the rotated rectangle: width = w·|cos θ| + h·|sin θ| and height = w·|sin θ| + h·|cos θ|. The canvas is translated to its center, rotated by θ, scaled by −1 on the flipped axes, and the image is drawn centered. Multiples of 90° simply swap width and height, so no pixels are interpolated.
Common Use Cases
- Fixing a photo that was shot sideways.
- Straightening a scanned document tilted by 2–3 degrees.
- Mirroring a selfie or text image.
- Creating a rotated graphic with a transparent background for a design.
Security Note
Images are decoded, processed and encoded locally in your browser with the Canvas API. Nothing is uploaded to a server.
FAQs
Is rotating by 90° lossless?
The pixels are moved without interpolation. If you save as PNG the result is lossless; JPEG or WebP output re-compresses the image.
Why did my image get bigger after rotating 45°?
The canvas expands to the rotated bounding box so no part of the image is cut off. Crop it afterwards with the Image Cropper if you want.
What is the difference between flipping and rotating 180°?
Rotating 180° turns the image upside down. Flipping horizontally mirrors left and right without turning it.
