What is Placeholder Image Generator?

Make simple placeholder images that show their dimensions (like 640×360) or your own label, in any size from 1 to 4000 pixels. Pick the background and text colors and export as PNG, JPEG, WebP or SVG. Images are drawn locally, so you do not depend on a placeholder web service.

How to use Placeholder Image Generator

  1. Enter the Width and Height in pixels.
  2. Choose the Background and Text color, and type a Label or leave it empty to show the size.
  3. Pick the Format.
  4. Download the image or copy the SVG code / data URI.

Example

Input
Width 300, Height 150, Background #cccccc, Text color #555555, Format SVG
Output
<svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="300" height="150" viewBox="0 0 300 150"><rect width="100%" height="100%" fill="#cccccc"/><text x="50%" y="50%" fill="#555555" font-family="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" font-size="30" text-anchor="middle" dominant-baseline="central">300×150</text></svg>

When to use Placeholder Image Generator

Use it for wireframes, design mockups, testing responsive layouts and image components, and seeding CMS or e-commerce demos. For realistic previews use real or stock photos; for blurred loading placeholders use a low-resolution version of the actual image instead.

How Placeholder Image Generator works

For PNG, JPEG and WebP the image is painted on an HTML canvas of the requested size: a filled rectangle plus the label centered in Arial, with a font size of one fifth of the shorter side (reduced for long labels so it fits), then exported with canvas.toDataURL. For SVG the tool writes a tiny vector file with a <rect> and a centered <text> element, which stays sharp at any zoom and is usually under 400 bytes.

Common Use Cases

  • Filling image slots in wireframes and prototypes
  • Testing aspect ratios and responsive image CSS
  • Seeding demo products in an online shop
  • Inlining tiny SVG placeholders as data URIs

FAQs

Which format should I choose?

SVG is the smallest and sharpest for flat placeholders; PNG is best when a raster file is required; JPEG and WebP are useful for testing photo pipelines.

Can I hotlink these images?

There is no hosting. Download the file or paste the data URI / SVG code directly into your HTML or CSS.

What is the maximum size?

4000 × 4000 pixels. Very large PNGs can take a moment to export depending on your device.
