What is Text Cleaner?

Applies several clean-up steps to text at once, each controlled by a checkbox: trimming lines, collapsing spaces, removing blank lines and invisible characters, straightening quotes and dashes, Unicode normalisation (NFKC), and optionally removing emoji, punctuation, digits or converting to lowercase.

How to use Text Cleaner

  1. Paste the messy text into the Input box.
  2. Tick the clean-up steps you need – the first four are on by default.
  3. Check the result in Output and copy or download it.

Example

Input
  Hello world

 ok
Output
Hello world
ok

Default options (trim lines, collapse spaces, remove blank lines, remove invisible characters)

When to use Text Cleaner

Use it before pasting text into a CMS, spreadsheet, database or AI prompt, or when text from Word, PDFs or chat apps contains odd spacing and hidden characters. Removing punctuation or digits is destructive – keep the original if you might need it.

How Text Cleaner works

Line endings are normalised to \n, then the selected steps run in a fixed order: NFKC normalisation (turns compatibility characters like full-width letters or the fi ligature into plain ones), removal of zero-width, bidi and other invisible format characters (special spaces become normal spaces), straight quotes and ASCII dashes/ellipsis, emoji removal (pictographs, flags, skin tones, joiners), punctuation and symbol removal (Unicode categories P and S), digit removal, lowercase, collapsing spaces, trimming lines and finally removing blank lines.

Common Use Cases

  • Cleaning text copied from PDFs or Word before publishing
  • Preparing text data for analysis or machine learning
  • Removing emoji and symbols from user-generated content
  • Normalising full-width characters from East Asian input methods
  • Stripping hidden characters that break code or CSV imports

FAQs

What does Unicode normalisation (NFKC) do?

It replaces compatibility variants with their standard form, e.g. Hello → Hello, ① → 1 and fi → fi. It can change the meaning of special symbols, so it is off by default.

Does removing punctuation keep letters with accents?

Yes. Only characters in the Unicode punctuation and symbol categories are removed; letters in every script, including accented ones, stay.

Is formatting like bold or links removed?

Plain text has no formatting. When you paste rich text into the box the browser already keeps only the text. For HTML source code, use Strip HTML Tags.
