When to use HTML to Markdown
Use it to migrate blog posts or documentation to Markdown, or to paste web content into Markdown editors. Complex layouts, colspan/rowspan tables and inline styles cannot be represented in Markdown and are simplified.
How HTML to Markdown works
The HTML is parsed into a DOM in your browser and converted with turndown. Extra rules add GitHub Flavored Markdown tables (the first row becomes the header, | inside cells is escaped), ~~strikethrough~~ for <del>/<s>, list items with a single space after the marker, and drop <script>, <style> and <noscript>. Elements without a Markdown equivalent keep only their text content.
Common Use Cases
- Migrate WordPress posts to a static site generator
- Copy documentation from a web page into a README
- Convert HTML email templates into Markdown notes
- Clean up CMS exports for Git-based docs
