Subscript Generator

Convert digits, math signs and available letters to Unicode subscript characters for chemical formulas and math (H₂O, xₙ). Copy and paste anywhere.

Unicode only has subscript forms for digits, + − = ( ), a few lowercase letters (a e h i j k l m n o p r s t u v x) and some Greek letters.

What is Subscript Generator?

Converts text to Unicode subscript characters, so formulas like H2O become H₂O in any plain-text field. Digits, + − = ( ), the lowercase letters that have subscript forms and a few Greek letters are converted; everything else stays and is counted.

How to use Subscript Generator

  1. Type the formula or text into the Input box.
  2. Copy the result from Output.
  3. Check the warning line to see how many characters had no subscript form.

Example

Input
H2O
Output
H₂O

H and O have no subscript form and stay normal

When to use Subscript Generator

Use it for chemistry and math in chats, social posts, spreadsheets and filenames. For documents and websites, real subscript formatting () is more legible and supports every character.

How Subscript Generator works

Characters are mapped to the Unicode subscript block (U+2080–U+209C) and phonetic extensions: digits ₀–₉, signs ₊₋₌₍₎, letters ₐₑₕᵢⱼₖₗₘₙₒₚᵣₛₜᵤᵥₓ and Greek ᵦᵧᵨᵩᵪ. Unicode has no subscript capitals and no subscript for b, c, d, f, g, q, w, y, z, so those characters are kept as normal text and counted – which is why the H and O in H₂O stay normal.

Common Use Cases

  • Writing chemical formulas like H₂O, CO₂, C₆H₁₂O₆
  • Math notation such as xₙ, aᵢ or log₂
  • Index numbers in plain-text notes
  • Formulas in spreadsheet cells and chat

FAQs

Why do capital letters stay normal?

Unicode defines no subscript capital letters. For formulas this is usually what you want: only the numbers are lowered.

Which letters are available?

a e h i j k l m n o p r s t u v x, plus Greek β γ ρ φ χ.

Will it look right on every device?

The digits are widely supported; some letter subscripts are missing in older fonts and may show as boxes.
