How VAT Calculator works
Adding VAT: VAT = net × rate and gross = net + VAT. Removing VAT: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate) and VAT = gross − net. Removing VAT is not the same as subtracting the rate from the gross price: 20% off 120 is 96, but the net price of 120 at 20% VAT is 100.
Common Use Cases
- Writing an invoice with VAT
- Finding the net price of a receipt
- Checking a supplier's VAT amount
- Converting gross prices to net for accounting
FAQs
Why not just subtract 20% to remove VAT?
VAT is a percentage of the net price, not of the gross price, so you must divide by 1.20.
Does it work for GST and sales tax?
Yes, the calculation is the same for any tax charged as a percentage of the net price.
Is rounding applied?
Results are shown with two decimals; invoices may round per line, which can differ by a cent.
