Cyclic Redundancy Check algorithms for error detection
CRC (cyclic redundancy check) checksums detect accidental changes in data, which is why they appear in ZIP archives, PNG images, Ethernet frames and serial protocols. Use the text tool for strings and the file tool to checksum a file locally. A CRC catches transmission errors but gives no protection against deliberate tampering – use SHA-256 for that.
