What is IBAN Validator?
This IBAN validator checks an International Bank Account Number in two ways: the mod-97 checksum defined in ISO 13616 and the exact length required by the account's country according to the SWIFT IBAN Registry. It shows the country, check digits, BBAN, electronic and print formats, and – if the check digits are wrong – the digits that would be correct.
How to use IBAN Validator
- Paste the IBAN; spaces, hyphens and an "IBAN" prefix are ignored.
- Read the verdict and the country name.
- Check the check-digit and length rows for the reason if it is invalid.
- Copy the electronic format for payment files or the print format for documents.
Example
GB83 WEST 1234 5698 7654 32
Invalid IBAN – 83 is wrong, the correct check digits would be 82 (GB82 WEST 1234 5698 7654 32 is valid).
When to use IBAN Validator
Use it to catch typos before a SEPA transfer, validate IBANs in imports or forms, or generate correct check digits for test data. It cannot confirm that the account exists or belongs to a given person; national BBAN rules (bank codes, internal check digits) are not verified.
How IBAN Validator works
The first four characters (country code and check digits) are moved to the end, letters are replaced by numbers (A = 10 … Z = 35) and the remainder of the resulting number divided by 97 is computed digit by digit; a valid IBAN gives remainder 1. The expected check digits are 98 minus the remainder with "00" as check digits. Country lengths come from the SWIFT IBAN Registry (e.g. DE 22, FR 27, GB 22, NO 15). Everything runs locally.
Common Use Cases
- Check an IBAN from an invoice before paying it.
- Validate supplier bank details in a bulk import.
- Find the correct check digits for a test IBAN.
- Reformat an IBAN into groups of four for printing.
FAQs
Does a valid IBAN mean the account exists?
No. It means the number is correctly formed. Only the bank can confirm the account and holder (some countries offer confirmation-of-payee services).
Which countries use IBAN?
All SEPA countries and many others in the Middle East, Africa and Latin America – 89 in the registry used here. The US, Canada and Australia do not use IBAN.
Is my IBAN sent anywhere?
No, the check runs entirely in your browser.
