Time Adder: Sum Hours, Minutes and Seconds

Add up a list of times in hh:mm:ss, minutes or 1h 30m format, subtract entries, get totals in hours and decimal hours, and add the sum to a clock time.

Formats: 1:30:15, 1:30, 90 (minutes), 1h 30m, 1.5h, 2d 4h, 45s. Start a line with - to subtract it.

For example a start time of 09:00.

What is Time Adder?

Adds up a list of durations, one per line, and gives the total. Lines starting with a minus sign are subtracted. Several formats can be mixed, such as 1:30:15, 45m, 1.5h or 2d 4h.

How to use Time Adder

  1. Type or paste durations into Durations (one per line); start a line with - to subtract it.
  2. Choose what two-part values like 1:30 mean: hours:minutes or minutes:seconds.
  3. Read the total as h:mm:ss, in words, in decimal hours, minutes and seconds.
  4. Optionally enter a clock time to see the time of day after adding the total.

Example

Input
1:30
90m
-15s
1h 20m 10s
Output
4:19:55 (15,595 seconds)

When to use Time Adder

Use it to total video clip lengths, lap or split times, logged hours or cooking steps. For start/end times of shifts use the time duration calculator; for calendar dates use the date calculator.

How Time Adder works

Each line is parsed into seconds: h:mm:ss values, two-part values according to your choice, a plain number as minutes, or unit notation with d, h, m and s (decimals allowed, e.g. 1.5h). Lines that cannot be read are reported by line number and ignored. The signed seconds are summed; the total is formatted with unlimited hours (e.g. 27:15:00) and, for clock times, wrapped around 24 hours with a day counter.

Common Use Cases

  • Summing the durations of songs or video clips
  • Adding up hours logged on tasks during a week
  • Totalling race splits
  • Working out when a sequence of tasks will finish

FAQs

Does 1:30 mean 1 hour 30 minutes or 1 minute 30 seconds?

By default hours:minutes. Switch the option to minutes:seconds for things like song lengths. Three-part values are always h:mm:ss.

Can the total exceed 24 hours?

Yes, hours are not wrapped, e.g. 30:15:00. The ‘In days’ field also shows days and hours.

What happens with an invalid line?

It is skipped and its line number is shown, so the total of the other lines is still correct.
