In character mode the ellipsis counts toward the limit; in word mode it is added after the last kept word.

What is Text Truncator?

Shortens text to a maximum number of characters or words and appends an ellipsis or any marker you choose. In character mode it can avoid cutting a word in half, and it can truncate every line separately for lists and spreadsheet columns.

How to use Text Truncator

  1. Paste the text into the Input box.
  2. Choose Limit by (characters or words) and set Maximum length.
  3. Edit the Ellipsis text (default …) or clear it to cut without a marker.
  4. Tick Don't cut words in half or Truncate each line separately if needed, then copy the result.

Output

When to use Text Truncator

Use it to prepare meta descriptions, product titles, notification texts or table cells with length limits. Search engines truncate titles by pixel width, not characters, so treat character limits for SERP snippets as approximate.

How Text Truncator works

Characters are counted as grapheme clusters, so emoji and accented letters are never split. In character mode the ellipsis counts toward the limit: with a limit of 10 and "…", at most 9 characters of text are kept. If word protection is on and the cut lands inside a word, the text is shortened back to the previous space; trailing spaces are removed before the ellipsis is added. In word mode the text is split on whitespace, the first N words are kept and the ellipsis is appended. Text already within the limit is returned unchanged.

Common Use Cases

  • Shortening meta descriptions to about 155 characters
  • Trimming product names to a marketplace's title limit
  • Creating teaser texts with a fixed word count
  • Truncating every line of a list for a fixed-width export

FAQs

Is the ellipsis included in the character limit?

Yes in character mode, so the result never exceeds the limit. In word mode the ellipsis is added after the last kept word.

Can I use "..." or "[more]" instead of …?

Yes, type any marker into Ellipsis, or leave it empty.

What happens if one word is longer than the limit?

With word protection there is no earlier space, so the word is cut at the limit rather than returning nothing.
