Speech is generated by your browser and operating system, so the available voices differ between devices. Voices marked ☁ are online voices and may send the text to the browser vendor's speech service.
What is Text to Speech?
Reads your text aloud using the speech synthesis built into your browser and operating system (Web Speech API). You can filter voices by language, pick a voice and adjust speed, pitch and volume, then play, pause, resume or stop.
How to use Text to Speech
- Type or paste the text into Text to read aloud.
- Choose a Language and a Voice (the list shows the voices installed on your device).
- Adjust Speed, Pitch and Volume.
- Press Speak; use Pause, Resume and Stop while it plays.
Example
Hello world
11 characters · 2 words – spoken with the selected voice
When to use Text to Speech
Use it to listen to drafts while proofreading, to hear the pronunciation of a sentence, or to rest your eyes with long texts. The tool cannot download an audio file because browsers do not expose the synthesised audio; voice quality and available languages depend entirely on your device.
How Text to Speech works
The tool creates a SpeechSynthesisUtterance with your text, the selected voice (or the language when no voice is chosen) and the rate (0.5–2), pitch (0–2) and volume (0–1) values, and passes it to window.speechSynthesis.speak(). Voices come from speechSynthesis.getVoices() and are refreshed when the browser reports new ones. The status line shows whether speech is ready, playing or paused, and a message appears if the browser has no speech synthesis.
Common Use Cases
- Proofreading by listening to your own text
- Hearing how a phrase sounds in a foreign language
- Listening to long articles instead of reading
- Checking how a script sounds before recording
Security Note
AlgoKit does not receive your text. Online (☁) voices are operated by your browser vendor and may process the text on their servers; choose a local voice for sensitive content.
FAQs
Why are there no voices for my language?
Voices are provided by your operating system or browser. Install additional speech voices in your system settings (for example Windows Speech, macOS Spoken Content or Android TTS) and reload the page.
Can I download the audio as MP3?
No. The Web Speech API plays audio directly and does not give websites access to the recording.
Is my text sent to a server?
Local voices run on your device. Voices marked ☁ are online voices provided by the browser vendor, and using them may send the text to that vendor's speech service.
