Paragraph Counter
Count paragraphs separated by blank lines, or treat every line as a paragraph. Shows words per paragraph and lists each paragraph found. Free and private.
Paragraphs are blocks of text separated by at least one blank line.
Runs entirely in your browser. Your data is never uploaded.
What is Paragraph Counter?
Counts the paragraphs in a block of text and shows the average number of words per paragraph. A list of detected paragraphs lets you verify the split, and an option switches between blank-line paragraphs and one paragraph per line.
How to use Paragraph Counter
- Paste your text into the Input box.
- Read the paragraph count in the highlighted card.
- Tick Count every non-empty line as a paragraph if your text uses single line breaks between paragraphs (common in text copied from chat apps or some editors).
- Open Detected paragraphs to check the result.
Example
First line still first Second
Paragraphs: 2 (3 with "Count every non-empty line as a paragraph")
When to use Paragraph Counter
Use it to check paragraph limits in assignments, to keep web paragraphs short, or to count blocks in pasted content. Text copied from web pages sometimes loses blank lines; in that case switch to the per-line option.
How Paragraph Counter works
By default the text is split wherever there is at least one empty line (a line break, optional spaces, another line break). Leading and trailing whitespace is trimmed and empty blocks are dropped. With the per-line option every line break starts a new paragraph and empty lines are ignored. Average words per paragraph uses the same Unicode word segmentation as the word counter.
Common Use Cases
- Checking that an essay has the required number of paragraphs
- Keeping blog paragraphs short for mobile readers
- Counting entries in text where each line is one item
- Comparing paragraph length between versions of a document
FAQs
What counts as a paragraph?
A block of text separated from the next block by at least one blank line. Lines that only contain spaces also count as blank.
My text has no blank lines – why is the count 1?
Without blank lines the whole text is one block. Turn on the per-line option to count every non-empty line instead.
Does indentation start a new paragraph?
No. Only blank lines (or line breaks, with the per-line option) separate paragraphs.
