Fuel Cost Calculator
Calculate the fuel and cost of a trip from distance, fuel economy and price, in km or miles, L/100km, km/L or MPG (US/UK), per litre or gallon.
Results
- Fuel = distance × consumption. 1 US gallon = 3.785 L, 1 UK gallon = 4.546 L, 1 mile = 1.609 km.
What is Fuel Cost Calculator?
Estimates how much fuel a trip uses and what it costs, with free choice of units: distance in km or miles, fuel economy in L/100 km, km/L, US MPG or UK MPG, and price per litre, US gallon or UK gallon. It also converts the fuel economy to all four units.
How to use Fuel Cost Calculator
- Enter the Distance and choose km or miles.
- Enter the Fuel economy and choose its unit.
- Enter the Fuel price and its unit, and read the trip cost.
Example
500 km, 6.5 L/100 km, 1.80 per litre
Trip cost 58.50; 32.5 L; 36.19 MPG (US), 43.46 MPG (UK)
When to use Fuel Cost Calculator
Use it to budget road trips, split fuel costs or compare cars. Real consumption depends on speed, load and traffic, so use your car's measured average when possible.
How Fuel Cost Calculator works
Economy is converted to litres per 100 km: km/L → 100 ÷ value; US MPG → 235.215 ÷ value; UK MPG → 282.481 ÷ value. Fuel = distance in km × L/100km ÷ 100. Cost = litres × price per litre (gallon prices are divided by 3.785411784 L or 4.54609 L). Miles use 1 mi = 1.609344 km.
Common Use Cases
- Estimating the fuel cost of a holiday drive
- Converting US MPG to L/100 km
- Splitting fuel costs between passengers
- Comparing the running cost of two cars
FAQs
Why are US and UK MPG different?
A UK (imperial) gallon is 4.546 L while a US gallon is 3.785 L, so the same car shows a higher MPG in UK units.
Is lower or higher better?
For L/100 km lower is better; for km/L and MPG higher is better.
Does it include tolls or parking?
No, only fuel.
