Barcode Generator
Create EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, ITF-14, Code 128 and Code 39 barcodes in your browser. Check digits are calculated or verified; download as PNG or SVG.
Any ASCII text: letters, digits and symbols.
What is Barcode Generator?
Generate 1D barcodes for products, shipping cartons, inventory labels and asset tags. Supported formats are Code 128, EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, Code 39, ITF-14 and ITF. For retail formats the tool calculates the GS1 check digit for you, or verifies it when you enter the full number.
How to use Barcode Generator
- Choose the Format.
- Enter the Data to encode (for EAN-13 either 12 digits or the full 13).
- Adjust Bar width, Height, colors and whether to Show the value under the bars.
- Download the barcode as PNG or SVG.
Example
EAN-13, data 590123412345
5901234123457
The check digit 7 is calculated and appended.
When to use Barcode Generator
Use it for labels, prototypes, internal inventory and printing barcodes for numbers you already own. Retail EAN/UPC numbers must be licensed from GS1 for products sold in stores — generating the barcode image does not give you a valid product number. For 2D codes with URLs or lots of text, use the QR code generator.
How Barcode Generator works
Input is validated per format: Code 128 accepts ASCII, Code 39 uppercase letters, digits and - . $ / + % and space, ITF an even number of digits. For EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A and ITF-14 the GS1 mod-10 check digit is computed by weighting digits 3, 1, 3, 1… from the right, summing, and taking (10 − sum mod 10) mod 10; a wrong final digit is reported with the correct one. The bars are then drawn as SVG by the open-source JsBarcode library; PNG export renders that SVG at 2× resolution.
Common Use Cases
- Printing EAN-13 labels for products with assigned GTINs
- Creating Code 128 labels for warehouse locations or assets
- Making ITF-14 barcodes for shipping cartons
- Checking whether an EAN or UPC check digit is correct
FAQs
How is the EAN-13 check digit calculated?
Multiply the 12 digits alternately by 1 and 3 starting from the left (3 for the digit next to the check digit), add them up, and take the amount needed to reach the next multiple of 10.
Can I make up my own EAN-13 number?
For internal use, yes. For products sold in shops you need a GS1 company prefix; otherwise your number may clash with someone else's product.
Which format should I use for internal labels?
Code 128 is compact and encodes letters, digits and symbols, so it is the usual choice for warehouse and asset labels.
