Avatar Generator
Create default profile pictures from initials or a GitHub-style identicon pattern. Same name, same avatar. Circle or square, any size; download SVG or PNG.
The first letters of the first and last word are used, e.g. "Ada Lovelace" → AL.
What is Avatar Generator?
Generate default avatars for users who have not uploaded a photo. Initials style shows the first letters of the name on a color picked from the name; Identicon style draws a symmetric 5×5 pattern derived from a hash of any text (username or email). The same input always gives the same avatar, and you can download it as SVG or PNG.
How to use Avatar Generator
- Pick the Style: Initials or Identicon (pattern).
- Enter the Name (or any text for identicons).
- Choose the Size, Shape and colors, or keep Pick the color automatically from the text.
- Download PNG or SVG, or copy the SVG code.
Example
Initials, name Grace Hopper
GH
Drawn as an SVG circle with a background color derived from the name.
When to use Avatar Generator
Use it for placeholder profile pictures in apps, comment sections, CRMs and admin panels, or to give each user a recognizable visual. Identicons are not anonymous for emails: anyone who knows the email can reproduce the pattern, so hash a user ID instead if privacy matters.
How Avatar Generator works
Initials take the first character of the first and last words (Ada Lovelace → AL; one word → its first two letters), uppercased with Unicode support. The automatic background color is a hue from a 32-bit FNV-1a hash of the lowercase name, at fixed saturation and lightness so white text stays readable. Identicons hash the lowercase text with SHA-256 (Web Crypto); 15 bits of the hash switch the cells of the left three columns of a 5×5 grid, which is mirrored to the right, and two more bytes choose the color. The result is a small SVG; PNG export renders it on a canvas.
Common Use Cases
- Default profile pictures in a web or mobile app
- Distinguishing users in comment threads and chat
- Creating team-member avatars for a website
- Generating repeatable identicons for test accounts
FAQs
Will the same name always give the same avatar?
Yes. Both the automatic color and the identicon pattern are derived from the text, so they are stable.
Does it work with non-Latin names?
Yes. Initials use full Unicode characters, so names in Vietnamese, Arabic, Chinese and other scripts work.
SVG or PNG?
SVG is tiny and sharp at any size, ideal for web apps. Use PNG where SVG is not accepted (some email clients and social platforms).
