What is Unicode Converter?
Shows the Unicode code points of any text in the notation you need – U+1F600, \uD83D\uDE00, \u{1F600}, \U0001F600, 😀, 😀 or \1F600 – and converts any mix of those notations back to text.
How to use Unicode Converter
- Choose Text → code points or Code points → text.
- When converting text, pick the Notation; optionally tick Convert only non-ASCII characters to keep plain letters readable.
- Type or paste in Input and copy the Output.
Example
Hi 😀
U+0048 U+0069 U+0020 U+1F600
When to use Unicode Converter
Use it to write non-ASCII characters in source code, JSON, CSS content or HTML; to find out exactly which code points a string contains; or to read escaped strings from logs. For details about a single character (name, category, UTF-8 bytes) use Unicode Lookup.
How Unicode Converter works
Text is split into code points (not UTF-16 units), so emoji are one code point. The JavaScript notation writes characters above U+FFFF as a surrogate pair, Python uses \U with 8 digits, ES6 and HTML use the code point directly, CSS adds a space only when the next character could be read as a hex digit. Decoding recognises U+XXXX, \uXXXX (pairs combine), \u{…}, \UXXXXXXXX, \xHH, &#x…;, &#…; and CSS \HEX escapes anywhere in the text.
Common Use Cases
- Escaping emoji for JSON or Java source files
- Writing CSS
content: "\2713"values - Decoding
\u00e9-style strings from logs - Checking for invisible or look-alike characters
FAQs
Why does 😀 become two \u escapes in JavaScript?
JavaScript strings are UTF-16; characters above U+FFFF are stored as a surrogate pair (\uD83D\uDE00). ES6 \u{1F600} writes the code point directly.
Can I decode a mix of notations?
Yes, all supported notations are recognised in the same input; other text is kept.
What is a code point?
The number Unicode assigns to a character, written as U+ followed by at least four hex digits.
