What is Hex Decode?

Turns hexadecimal bytes back into readable text, decoding them as UTF-8. It understands common formats: 48656c6c6f, 48 65 6c, 48:65:6c, 0x48 0x65 and \x48\x65.

How to use Hex Decode

  1. Paste the hex into Input in any of the supported formats.
  2. The decoded text appears in Output.
  3. Use Copy, or Use as input to re-encode with different formatting.

Example

Input
0x48 0x69 0xc3 0xa0
Output
Hià

When to use Hex Decode

Use it to read hex dumps, byte arrays from logs or escaped strings. If the bytes are not text (an image, a hash), the tool reports that they are not valid UTF-8 – in that case keep them as hex or use the Base64 tools.

How Hex Decode works

0x and \x prefixes, whitespace, colons, commas, semicolons and hyphens are removed; the remaining digits must be hexadecimal and even in number. Each pair becomes one byte, and the bytes are decoded as strict UTF-8 so that invalid sequences are reported instead of being replaced silently.

Common Use Cases

  • Reading hex-encoded strings in logs or database dumps
  • Decoding \x.. escapes copied from source code
  • Checking what text a hex payload contains

FAQs

Why does it say the hex must have an even number of digits?

Each byte is exactly two hex digits. An odd count means a digit is missing or extra.

Can it decode Latin-1 or UTF-16 hex?

No, the bytes are decoded as UTF-8. Other encodings will show a "not valid UTF-8" error.

Is uppercase hex accepted?

Yes, A–F and a–f both work.
