How Number to Words works

Conversion uses the n2words library, which has hand-written grammar rules per language and works on BigInt, so numbers far beyond 2^53 are spelled exactly. Input is normalized first (spaces, apostrophes and thousands separators removed, comma or dot accepted as decimal separator). Ordinals require a positive integer. Currency mode splits the amount into major and minor units of the language's currency, for example dollars and cents for English (US) or đồng for Vietnamese; Chinese uses financial (大写) numerals for amounts.

Common Use Cases

  • Write the amount in words on an invoice or cheque
  • Check how to spell a large number in French or Russian
  • Generate ordinal words for rankings or dates
