What is JSON to Excel?

Paste JSON and download a real Excel workbook. An array of objects becomes one sheet with a header row; an object whose values are arrays becomes one sheet per key. A preview shows the first rows of every sheet before you download.

How to use JSON to Excel

  1. Paste JSON into JSON input or click Load sample.
  2. Set the Sheet name (used for a single array).
  3. Check the preview table and the rows × columns summary.
  4. Click Download .xlsx.

Example

Input
[{"id":1,"user":{"name":"Ada"}},{"id":2,"user":{"name":"Bob"}}]
Output
Sheet “Sheet1”: 2 rows × 2 columns (id, user.name)

When to use JSON to Excel

Use it to hand JSON data to people who work in Excel or Google Sheets. It writes data only – no formulas, number formats, column widths or styling.

How JSON to Excel works

Each record is flattened like the JSON to CSV tool: nested objects and arrays become dot-path columns (address.city, tags.0), and the header row is the union of all keys. Numbers and booleans keep their types in the cells, null becomes an empty cell. The workbook is built with SheetJS and written as a compressed .xlsx file in your browser; sheet names are sanitized to Excel's 31-character rules.

Common Use Cases

  • Send an API export to a colleague as an Excel file
  • Turn JSON logs into a sortable spreadsheet
  • Create a multi-sheet workbook from grouped data
  • Prepare data for pivot tables

FAQs

How do I create several sheets?

Use an object whose values are arrays, e.g. {"users":[…], "orders":[…]}; each key becomes a sheet.

Will Excel open the file?

Yes, it is a standard Office Open XML (.xlsx) workbook that also opens in LibreOffice and Google Sheets.

Is there a row limit?

Excel allows 1,048,576 rows per sheet; in practice the browser's memory is the limit for very large JSON.
