What is JSON to CSV?

Turn a JSON array (or a single object) into CSV that opens in Excel, Google Sheets or any database import. Nested objects and arrays are flattened into dot-path columns such as user.name or tags.0, and the header row contains every key found in any record.

How to use JSON to CSV

  1. Paste JSON into the JSON input box, or use Load sample or Open file.
  2. Choose the Delimiter and whether to include the header row.
  3. Optionally Quote every field or use Windows line endings (CRLF).
  4. The CSV output updates as you type; use Copy or Download.

Example

Input
[{"id":1,"user":{"name":"Ada, L"}},{"id":2,"user":{"name":"Bob"}}]
Output
id,user.name
1,"Ada, L"
2,Bob

When to use JSON to CSV

Use it to open API data in a spreadsheet or import it into a database. Deeply nested or very irregular JSON produces many sparse columns; in that case consider exporting only the fields you need first.

How JSON to CSV works

Each record is flattened recursively: object keys and array indexes are joined with dots, empty objects/arrays are kept as {} / [], and a primitive array item becomes a single value column. Columns are the union of all keys in first-seen order, so records with missing keys get empty cells. PapaParse's unparse then writes the rows with RFC 4180 quoting – fields containing the delimiter, quotes or line breaks are quoted and inner quotes doubled.

Common Use Cases

  • Open an API response in Excel or Google Sheets
  • Export JSON logs for analysis in a spreadsheet
  • Prepare data for a CSV database import
  • Share structured data with non-developers

FAQs

How are nested arrays handled?

Each element gets its own indexed column (tags.0, tags.1). This keeps all data and can be converted back with the CSV to JSON tool's nesting option.

Which delimiter should I use for Excel?

Excel in many European locales expects a semicolon; choose ; if commas end up in one column.

Why is a value quoted?

Fields containing the delimiter, a double quote or a line break must be quoted to stay valid CSV.
