[{"id": 1, "name": "Ada", "joined": "2024-01-15T00:00:00.000Z", "active": true}, …] When to use Excel to JSON
Use it to turn spreadsheets into JSON for APIs, fixtures or scripts without installing anything. It reads values, not formatting: merged cells, colors, comments and formulas are not exported.
How Excel to JSON works
The file is read with SheetJS (xlsx) inside your browser. Cell values keep their types: numbers stay numbers, booleans stay booleans, empty cells become null and date cells are converted to ISO 8601 strings in UTC. With a header row, SheetJS uses the first row as keys (duplicate headers get suffixes); "All sheets" produces an object keyed by sheet name. Formulas are not recalculated – the cached result stored in the file is used.
Common Use Cases
- Turn a product list maintained in Excel into JSON for a website
- Import spreadsheet data into a NoSQL database
- Create test fixtures from a shared Google Sheets export
- Inspect the raw cell values of an .xlsx file
FAQs
Is my file uploaded?
No. SheetJS runs in your browser and the file never leaves your device.
Why are dates in UTC?
Excel stores dates without a time zone; they are written as ISO 8601 strings at midnight UTC so the calendar date stays stable.
Are formulas evaluated?
The value cached in the file by Excel is used; formulas are not recalculated.
